The East Allen County Schools board unanimously approved the architectural firms recommended to handle the district's building projects, approved by the board in October when a districtwide redesign was proposed.
Out of 12 proposals, the district interviewed six firms and chose three to handle the five major building projects. RQAW Consulting Engineers and Architects will handle the two K-12 settings at Heritage and Woodlan; Moake Park Group will work on the Paul Harding College and Career Academy and New Haven Junior-Senior High School. Barton-Coe-Vilamaa will handle the New Haven Intermediate School project.
Superintendent Karyle Green said firms were chosen to handle similar building projects in the hopes that communities will collaborate and provide feedback and that a cost savings will be realized.
“It will be beneficial to have the same architect working on like projects,” she said.
The board approved a redesign plan that would help it save $6.8 million and create feeder systems in the district's five unique attendance areas: Leo-Cedarville, New Haven, Harding, Heritage and Woodlan. The savings come at a time when the district is spending more than it is bringing in because of decreased enrollment.
While the board seems to know where it's going, members are still struggling with how to get there.
The board heard a presentation Tuesday night on the administration's recommendation to close Monroeville and Harlan elementary schools next year, moving students to Hoagland and Woodburn elementary schools while the Heritage and Woodlan K-12 settings are built. The recommendation was based on transportation and utility costs, building modifications required and capacity.
Monroeville residents have long advocated keeping their town's elementary school open, saying it will destroy the town otherwise. The school has an enrollment of about 170 students and only a part-time principal. Board Vice President the Rev. Stephen Terry asked how much of a savings the district would really see by closing the school for a year.
All four elementary schools were proposed to close under the approved redesign plan, but members asked the administration to provide the exact cost savings for closing each building to compare.
The board will vote on the decision at its March 1 meeting.
The board has already voted to close New Haven and Village elementary schools. Member Alyssa Lewandowski, the New Haven area representative, voted against the district's recommendation.
